Overview

Medical Coding Specialist:

The Medical Coding Specialist will review, analyze, and
accurately assign CPT/HCPCS codes, modifiers, place of service, and/or ICD-10 codes as appropriate, by abstracting pertinent information from outpatient behavioral health and primary care medical records.

 

The Coding Specialist will review patient medical records to ensure that the rendering provider has adequately and
appropriately documented the service provided and will assign all relevant codes using their knowledge of documentation and coding guidelines to achieve and maintain compatibility with regulatory and payer documentation, billing requirements, and standards.

 

This position collaborates with Medical Coding Director to provide education and training to medical practitioners and other staff. This position reviews and resolves documentation and coding issues and participates in process improvements for behavioral health and primary care specialties.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the daily abstract coding of behavioral health and primary care encounters while maintaining JFCS accuracy and productivity levels per JFCS practice guidelines;
  • Understands and utilizes medical practitioner provider query process for clarification of clinical data when encountering conflicting or ambiguous information;
  • curately abstracts and codes behavioral health and primary care outpatient records utilizing ICD10-CM and CPT codes;
  • Performs claim denial reviews on outpatient encounters to validate the International Classification of Diseases Manual (ICD-10-CM), CPT/HCPCS code sets and provide feedback to the healthcare
    professional and management;
  • Educates healthcare professionals and others in the use of technical coding guidelines and
    practices and proper documentation techniques to maximize accuracy, completeness, and
    compliance with acceptable standards of practice and coding guidelines;
  • Maintains knowledge of current industry coding and compliance guidelines and regulations; Maintains required coding certification;
  • Maintains knowledge of current documentation and coding information related to payer reimbursement regulations;
  • Uses all applicable rules and regulatory guidelines with regard to the confidential nature of the information contained in health records;
  • Performs other related job tasks or responsibilities, as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Certificate or associates degree in medical coding or related degree
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification
  • One year of Physician E/M Auditing experience.
  • Two years of Ambulatory Medical Record Coding experience, abstract preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II coding and the current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (e.g., DSM V).
  • Staff training experience in a healthcare setting
  • Previous experience interacting with external coding auditors
  • Advanced principles and practices of medical record keeping; advanced medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, as well as the states, sequence, progression and description of diseases as they apply to medical record coding.
  • Appropriate methods for auditing and reviewing information for quality control purposes.
  • Understand and apply anatomical, physiological and medical terminology.
  • Conduct chart reviews using the 1997 E&M Guidelines
  • Conduct chart reviews of outpatient medical records to verify the appropriateness of diagnostic codes selection and medical record abstracts.
  • Work with physicians and others to ensure complete and accurate information and optimal reimbursement based on coding and abstracting of medical records.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
